Project TechWhiz on the go

The TechWhiz (Sign Language Technical Dictionary) project aims to advance inclusive higher education by tearing down the barriers that deaf students face when coming across new concepts that have no corresponding sign language sign and require an explanation to promote a swift takeover of new knowledge in a specific study field.

TechWhiz will deliver an assistive technology tool to generate sign language explanations of concepts from a given study field. The explanations will be provided in textual form – sign language gloss – either by sign language experts, whenever feasible, or automatically using online dictionaries that offer querying services like Priberam for Portuguese, for instance. The sign language gloss is then reproduced by a 3D avatar in a specific sign language.

Our research unit will keep you updated on this new project!
