25-02-2015ISEP project received the Award Inclusion and Digital Literacy from Fundação para a Ciência e Tecnologia (FCT). The technology developed in ISEP it’s called Virtual Sign and uses new ICT to promote intelligent inclusion of deaf and hearing impaired people.
The award distinguishes highly commendable projects in the area of inclusion and digital literacy, intending thereby to encourage the sharing of good practices and to contribute to the development and implementation of innovative ideas.
This technology, developed by the research group Games Interaction & Learning Technologies (GILT), under Paula Escudeiro’s coordination, consists of a bidirectional sign language translator that makes digital and specially educational contents easier to access.
The project uses a glove with sensors and also resorts to Kinect technology, moreover it incorporates a didactic game to teach sign language.
Coordinated by ISEP, Virtual Sign was supported by Fundação Ciência e Tecnologia (FCT) with 100,000 euros and included several researchers from ISEP, Universidade do Porto, Universidade Aberta and a specialist in sign language.
